Mobile milling can provide a great solution to transform your timber to useable raw materials for a broad range of uses from fence posts to building materials and bespoke furniture as well as a range of other products.![]()
This event will have input from professional millers, traditional oak framers and furniture makers. ![]()
The event will cover:![]()
A demonstration of the mobile LT40 Wood-Mizer sawmill showing how it handles oak logs i.e., cutting, log handling with hydraulics and also the cutting sizes.![]()
An insight into what an oak framer requires from the raw material, covering:![]()
- Type and quality of timber required by framers
- Beams, curves and crucks
- How the ordering process works
- Sizes and volumes
- Typical specifications
- An idea of costs![]()
An insight into what a furniture maker requires from the raw material, covering:![]()
- The finished products made from in house hardwoods
- Material procurement
- Milling with a finished product in mind
- Kiln drying and storage
- Machining Scottish hardwoods
- Challenges around purchasing logs![]()

Trees and Timber Measurement Training Course

This is a one-day course for anyone who would like to be able to assess the timber they have in their woodlands and is suitable for woodland owners and managers as well as forestry/woodland contractors.![]()
The aim of the course is: –![]()
To equip participants with the basic knowledge required to sample woodlands, select trees for felling and understand how to measure single trees or stands of trees with the purpose of estimating volume.![]()
Participants will learn how to use basic mensuration equipment and to use the necessary references or formulae to work out volumes from measurements taken.![]()
Reference will be made to measuring timber through weight and to common problems of timber quality.
Cost: £85 per person![]()
9:30am to 4pm Tea and Coffee provided, lunch will be provided![]()
